Description

Saturday, March 7: 8 am - 12 pm, Community Pancake Breakfast for purchase at The Homestead 10 am - 3 pm, Main Event at Dechow and Olsen Farms, free with park pass Sunday, March 8: 11 am - 3 pm, Main Event at Dechow and Olsen Farms, free with park pass Come experience the maple sugaring process through time in the Port Oneida Historic District in Sleeping Bear Dunes. The event takes place March 7-8 at Dechow and Olsen farmsteads. At Dechow, learn the history of maple sugaring from the Anishinaabe, to the Settler's open fire process, to the present day. You will even visit an historic sugar shack. Step inside the Olsen farmhouse across the street for the final boiling of sap, sugar making, hands-on kids' games, and maple syrup snow cones. Various maple products and syrup will be on-hand. If walking between stops at Dechow farm is not your pace, this one-stop demonstration is on-going at Olsen. Plan on spending 2.5 hours at the event to experience both sites. Parking is available at each farm. The farms are located one mile north of The Homestead, on Harbor Hwy. (M-22), between Thoreson and Port Oneida roads. Maple Sugar Days is presented by Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in partnership with Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear. The event is free with a park pass. The festivities kick off at the annual Community Pancake Breakfast at the Homestead Resort's CQ's Cabin on Saturday, March 7 from 8am - 12pm. Menu includes pancakes, sausage, bacon, eggs, potatoes, fruit and beverages at $17 per adult, $9 per child ages 6-12, and free for children 5 and under. The breakfast is hosted by the Homestead Resort, sponsored by Sleeping Bear Visitor's Bureau, with proceeds benefiting Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear.
